Using Trackbacks in Blogs to Drive More Traffic
A trackback a back line method used in blog publishing to notify
bloggers when someone has linked to their blog [and other online
documents].
Just as Blog programs such as Wordpress support automatic pingbacks,
a trackback pings an acknowledgment from the originating site to
the receiving site.
Getting trackbacks to your blog helps both build traffic and build
page rank of your blog. This link traffic helps to build trust by
traffic being routed from a blog they already trust.
How to Use Trackback
- Locate a post on a popular blog that you can add value to via
a comment.
- Get permlink to the source post so you can refer back to the
actual post, and not the overall blog home page.
- Write a post for your own blog, including the permalink URL
to link back to the source post. Note below the post window there
is a space to add a trackback link. We will go get this now and
enter it into this space.
- Save, but do not publish just yet.
- Go back to the source post. Locate the trackback URL. This is
different from the permalink URL. Some blogs just display the
trackback URL openly, others you need to click on a link that
opens a small window with the trackback URL.
- Copy this TrackBack URL and paste into your weblog entry in
the specific space labelled either Trackbacks or 'URLs to Ping'.
- Now Publish your blog post.

The ping will automatically notify the author of the original blog
that you have posted something about them. At the bottom of their
original post, will will see a new entry under the Trackback heading
with a link to your blog.
Voila - a new backlink.
As a bonus, the original author may even add a comment about your
blog post, adding another link back to your blog.
This is the way digital publishing should work. Each publisher
adding additional value to the content of another, and collectively
building universal knowledge and wisdom.
