Components Of A Book
A book has many more components than basic text and graphics bound
betwen a glossy cover.
You also need:
Book Name - I often prefer to leave the final
name until the book is near completion.
An International Standard Book Number (ISBN) -
a unique number assigned to the book, used by bookstores, book wholesalers
and readers to identify particular titles. You can get an ISBN from
the R. R. Bowker Company. For a fee of $US225 you get 10 ISBNs.
Every version of your book will need a separate ISBN - hardback,
paperback, ebook and audio version. For
more information on ISBN. Note: as of 1 Jan 2007, the
US ISBN changed to a new 13 digit number, which aligns with International
ISBN .
ISBN Bar Code - this is the scanning code used
by bookstores. Also available at Bowkers.
Price ranges from $21-$25 per bar code.
Library of Congress Catalog Number - needed to
get your book into libraries, which can be a big market. For
more information
European Article Number (EAN) Scanning Symbol -
a special UPC bar code scanning symbol used just for books. For
vendors who will create EAN symbols.
A Price - this will need to be printed on your
book. A general guide is five times to cost of each book in your
initial production run. Check the prices of similar books, and pick
an average price. Avoid going to the low end of the range.
Testimonials - these are the endorsements you
see on the back cover of books.
Font and Back Cover Text - layout and choice of
fonts is very important in creating the right perception of your
book
Front Pages - the preface, table of contents,
the copyright page, and acknowledgments
Author Bio - for the back cover, often on the
portion folded inside the back cover.
