Optimizing Your Blog
Most Internet Marketers use blogs as a quick and convenient way
to share small snippets of information to their site visitors.
But not so many take the next step of fully optimzing their blogs
using blog feeds or syndication.
Blog Feeds
Most blog programs include a a web feed capablity [using RSS
or Atom] that automatically updates whenever you add or edit a post
on your blog.
Readers of your blog have the option of 'subscribing' to your blog.
Subscribers are notified by the feed system whenever new content
is posted to your blog, or existing blogs are edited.
The subscriber then accesses your blog web feeds using a special
"feed reader" [such as Google Feed Reader] program
that continuously checks for updates.
Syndication
Syndication is when you submit your blog feed to other websites,
so that they may republish you posts on a regular basis. These sites
are to blogs, as article directories are to articles. The big advantage
over articles, however, is that syndication is set up to automatically
submit your posts as you publish them.
Syndication is an excellent way to easily diversify your readership.
Blog Syndication Sites
You can add your blog to these directories by copying the link
from your web feed icon and pasting it into the "Feed
URL" field at www.feedsubmitter.com.
Other Optimization Strategies
Now that you have optimized the readership potential of your blog,
there are a few things you can do on-page to make your blog work
for you and drive revenue.
Add Targeted Category Tags
When you write a post, you can assign it to categories [that you
create on the fly]. By using highly targeted keywords as your categories
- these effectively tag your blog in the same way that keywords
are using in meta on webpages.
- Use your main keyword in the blog title - note, if you plan
to use a graphics header you will need to use a blog template
that allows you the option of either showing the title text or
not. Otherwise the blog title will show over top of the graphic,
or if you turn off the option, there will be no blog title for
your blog in the directories.
- Ensure that you use the same keywords in your post and the title.
- Use only two categories per post - to minimize content duplication
and ensure the content provides value to the category section.
Brand Your Blog
Brand your blog to match your website by making a few changes to
the template. I In particular:
- Replace the heading with your own
- Modify the .css to match your site styles
- Ensure Post Titles are permalinked to your website - ensure
that the keyword relevance in the link adds credibility to the
linked page. For instance, I always have a section on my Antiaging-Wellness
website home page for most recent blogs. Look at the links. Rather
than just put the link Antiaging-Wellness
Blog I use specific permalinks to the post page using targeted
keywork links - Using
Weight Training To Treat Osteoporosis
- Add your blog title at the end of your post title - this ensures
all your syndicated blog posts include your site/blog name
- Interlink your posts - especially those that have generated
high interest.
- Reference your site pages in your posts - posts should be short
succinct copy. Adding a link to your main site page that provides
more information helps keep your site links growing as well as
your blog.
- Avoid duplicate content penalties - as mentioned above, keep
your categories limited to two and block access using .htaccess
to either your categories or archives.
- Add your blog to BlogRankings.com
